U.S.A., Winston-Salem, North Carolina 2016
A potter demonstrates the skills of the Moravian people who settled Winston-Salem in the 18th century.
The potter worked by window light as did the early settlers…window light and door light are gifts to photographers. Luckily, the sun was not shining directly in the window or the contrast between light and dark would have been difficult to overcome.
I shot 9 exposures. I checked my camera monitor and adjusted the exposure until I liked what I saw. Since I prefer strong shadows, I closed my aperture a full stop, but I did it in increments. My brother, another photographer, shot film and I had a frisson of guilt that digital gave me an advantage.
