Waiting in the Sahara

Waiting

Sahara Desert, somewhere in Mauritania 2005

Our small caravan of 4×4’s stopped in a small settlement in the empty sands of Mauritania. We tourists crawled into a straw hut to escape the heat. We drank warm Coca Colas, which we bought from these men.  I don’t remember how much the Cokes cost, but they were worth every penny. The water we had to drink on our trip tasted of soap and smelled of diesel fuel as it was stored in jerry cans that had been emptied of diesel fuel just before they were filled with water for our trip. With every sip, I felt as if I were poisoning myself, but I forced myself to drink…It has been twelve years now and so far so good.
