Kashgar, China 2003

Uyghur families travel to the market in Kashgar. I was shooting film (slides) and took very few shots. Luckily some are good enough. If I had used digital, I’d have had hundreds of shots but still this might have been the best one!

I was very interested in the Uyghurs. They are a Turkic people and speak a form of Turkish. I was surprised to learn that a form of Turkish is used in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, although they were not part of the Ottoman Empire. You can see the hats worn by the men are similar to hats still worn in Uzbekistan today.
