Paris, France 2013…just a few days ago…from my daughter, Marie, who is my first guest blogger!
“The cake is called Carre d’Or – and is coated with gold leaf. It was delicious, though I couldn’t taste the gold, only the creamy chocolate. I recommend it – get it at Mariage-Freres (http://www.mariagefreres.com/
This photo was taken with an iPhone 5. I cropped it:
– to cut out the scrape on the plate that my spoon made when I took that first bite
-to remove all the extraneous tableware in the background
-to align the cake more in the lower right hand quadrant
Considering this was all done within say 5 minutes (to post on Instagram) I like the picture!
Two things:
1) I wish I had taken a picture before I ate a bite. Unfortunately it didn’t occur to me to photograph the gold cake until the chocolate mousse was melting in my mouth. It may not have made a good picture, but it sure would be great see it both ways, right?
2) I wish I had tried some different viewpoints – taken 30 seconds more to fiddle with the iphone zoom, so that I could get more detail on the cake. Cropping is good – but good photos are better.”
Hi Marie,
Sometimes good photos are just a matter of timing and place, the missing bite makes us, the readers/viewers/,hungry. The gold, being inert, is extravagant, no doubt the baker’s intention.

Thanks, Larry, for the comment. Yes, the whole cake is an extravagance – and you are right about the bite – even now looking at the picture again, my mouth is watering.
