Tibet: Drepung Monastery

Tibetan Women at Drepung Monastery

Tibet 2007

A younger woman helps an older woman up the stone steps of the monastery. There isn’t just one temple, there are many and the Tibetans who had come to pray wanted to enter and pray in all of them.

Inside the temples gleaming golden statues of Buddha sat or stood in various poses. Book cases painted in red with flowered designs lined the walls. Prayer benches filled the center of the temple. Cymbals and bells waited to accompany chanting monks. The smooth floors of wide wood planks had been polished by thousands of sock covered feet. Once I saw a young man kowtow to Buddha…kneeling with his forehead on the floor…murmuring the Buddhist prayers.

I’d love to see some shots of the interior of the temples but perhaps that wasn’t allowed. J.

Thanks for your comment, Jerry. I’ll have to look for some interior shots. I’ll try to find one this weekend and post it next week.

      Best, Rosemary
