Theyyam Ceremony

Theyyam Procession

Kasaragod, India 2009

Theyyam walked gracefully, with the dignity befitting a god come to life. He made the most of his costume, turning his head from side to side. He paraded around the small temple several times so that all could see him and petition his prayers. Acolytes walked at his side to steady him.  At times, though, Theyyam would be struck with a burst of fervor and twirl or bend his body so that his headdress touched the ground.

Theyyam bends his upper body so that his large headdress nearly touches the ground
