Construction of Zhuang House

China, 2005 Longii Mountain

Zhuang men build a house on the ridge of Longii Mountain which means Dragon’s Backbone. The blueprints are in the heads of the workers as they keep to the traditional design the Zhuang have built for years. If a deviation from the design is needed, instructions are inscribed with ink on a bamboo stick similar to a tongue depressor. The foreman hands them to each workman. That way he knows what part he is to build that day.
