St. Petersburg is filled with museums. The Hermitage, located in the Czar’s Winter Palace, is the most famous. This is one of the rooms displaying Western European Art and the collection is so large that it takes 120 rooms to display all of the paintings, drawings, sculpture, etc.
We were on a tour and had one morning in the Hermitage. We saw only a tiny part of it. It would be nice to spend one or two weeks in St. Petersburg and go to the Hermitage every day. The good thing about a tour is that we had reservations for the museum and didn’t have to wait to enter. Maybe it is possible to get reservations for an individual, I don’t know, but I’d find out if I were going by myself.
Photos were allowed, but no flash. Of course, the light is very low in most rooms, but in this gallery I think there was a skylight. It looks like that from the photo.
There is another museum in St. Petersburg that I wish I had visited. The Tretyakov Gallery. It contains only paintings by Russian artists.
With the internet, we can visit both museums any time we want. For a person who isn’t an artist, it’s as good as being there.
