The Czech Grandmother

Czech Woman in Field

Czechoslovakia 1989

Four women formed the brigade from the collective farm. Apparently they were good workers because there were no weeds among the long, green rows of potato plants.

I’ve shown the other women on a previous blog. I never could get the color of this woman’s complexion the way I (and she) wanted it. It was always too red so I went to sepia. Look at her expression. She radiates goodness.

This is a straight-on portrait. Usually, I look for an angle or place my subject using the rule of thirds. Recently I read a magazine article about Walker Evans. He ignored the rule of thirds and often shot his subjects straight on and centered. It can be dynamic. Must remember to try it more often.
