Azalai, a Tamasheq (Berber) term for salt caravan

A Berber man assists in the loading of salt slabs on the backs of camels. He controls the camel using the peg inserted in the camel’s nostrils. Control of the animal is important. An animal thrashing about can injure the caravan men, injure himself or other camels and can break a salt slab which makes the slab nearly worthless.
