The Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal with a retro look and framed by an archway on the grounds of the famous tomb

The Taj Mahal

Agra, India 2003

Sometimes you wish you could be alone at a famous landmark like the Taj. Unless you are important, you won’t be. You’ll be contending with tourists and caretakers and gardeners… unlike the ‘big boys’.

One way to keep tourists from walking in front of your lens is to get back, waaaay back, to shoot. That’s what I did here. My viewpoint is not out of the ordinary, but the sari-wearing tourists seen from this distance add color and the palm trees say exotic. I like the way those two elements seem to be paying homage to Mumtaz Mahal. Plus, I like my archway framing the scene. I did cut off one of the arches when I was adding the black frame in Photoshop. Sorry! I couldn’t make myself begin again. Let’s think of it as wabi-sabi. O.K.?
