Bokhara, Uzbekistan 2012
Lacey yellow-leafed poplars lined the park walkways. Mothers and children, Babushkas and BoBos (grandmothers and grandfathers) took advantage of the soft sunlight sifting through the trees to while away a pleasant autumn afternoon.
A young couple sat close to each other, but not too close, on a park bench. Islam is their religion, after all. Did they hold hands? I don’t know. I did sense that they were in love and were enjoying a special time alone, away from the watchful eyes of their families. They radiated happiness.
I asked for a photo. They immediately nodded. They were happy that I had asked. I could feel it. It was as if by taking their photo I had consecrated their love, had acknowledged that they were meant for each other. “Remember that day in the park when the woman took our photo? That was the day you proposed.”
The man, so very handsome, had the grape-green eyes that you sometimes see in Asia. Perhaps a testament to Alexander the Great’s army. The woman is a typical Russian beauty. I’m sure she has soft blond hair under her scarf.
I didn’t do a good job with this photo. It’s not sharp, but my memory of the moment is.

Thanks, Jerry. Love really was in the air.
