Romanian woman stands in front of her home

"I'm Still Here!"

We passed this woman’s cottage on our way to visit an old mill. Despite the cold weather, she was out in her garden, wearing only a sweater, tending the first daffodils of the season. When she spied Daniel, she called out, “I’m still here!” As he chatted with her, I got some photos.

She was a bit over 70, strong and vibrant. She’d survived WWII and communism with her sense of humor intact and now her life is good.  Wouldn’t it be interesting to hear her stories?

Her home was near the small river that powered the mill.  Cold air drifted up from the rushing water. She didn’t seem to feel the chill: the door to her home was open. I was dying to go in and see what it looked like, but I don’t think people offer that so much in eastern Europe.

As we left, she handed me a bouquet of daffodils because we were nearly the same age. I kept them for three days and they barely wilted.
