Lalibela, Ethiopia 2013
A worm’s eye view of one of Lalibela’s monolithic churches. I don’t remember the name of the church. As I’ve told you, I listen to my guide with half an ear or maybe less. My mind is on the photo. Here I’ve shot from as low as I could get using my wide angle lens. I had to ask my guide’s permission to use that camera because he had expropriated it under the guise of helping me. He was firing away getting his own unique viewpoint.
After seeing how he enjoyed photography, I offered to send him my old digital point and shoot if he was sure the post in Ethiopia would get it to him. If you could have seen his face! He was glowing with happiness. He and his friends assured me that he would get it. I sent the camera. Months passed and he hadn’t received it. He emailed asking me to contact the Ethiopian post. I responded tersely. More months passed. An email from Ethiopia. The camera had arrived. Once again he was happy. Me, too.
I like this shot especially because there are two people over on the left. They give a sense of size. To read more about the stone churches of Lailbela, click the links below.
