Ruins of St. Sergius

Syria 2010

Syria is a treasure trove of ancient ruins. Most can be classified as Roman ruins but many of those were built on top of even more ancient civilizations. Here is the church of St. Sergius built in the 5th century in honor of  St. Sergius who was beheaded because he refused to honor pagan gods. He was a Christian. The church which you see above is surrounded by a large area that was once the town. You can see the boundaries if you look just below the horizon line where you will see a wall of arches.

The view of the ruins as we approached. Nearby was a man herding camels and chatting into his cell phone. Times have changed, except the beheading part.
