Spreading Branches

No Longer Mundane

Ethiopia 2013

Large trees like this one dotted the landscape. Elizabeth and I spotted one that was the “granddaddy of all trees” but we didn’t ask the driver to stop. It stood alone on the verdant, lush grassland: its symmetrical branches spreading an umbrella of shade.

Later, regretting that we didn’t seize our chance, we did ask to stop but there was no other tree to compare with “our” tree. When I saw Elizabeth the other day, for the first time in more than a year, she asked me if I remembered, “our tree”. I did.

I looked through my shots and found this. It’s a beautiful tree but I felt it needed some Photoshop to make it special. I did this in Camera Raw…just a matter of toggling the sliders until something happens and then taking that as far as it will go.

A Tree Grows in Ethiopia

I might not have needed to resort to Photoshop if we’d had evening or morning light, but it was midday and flat light is a killer for photographs. What do you think? Which photo do you prefer?

I don’t know what kind of tree this is…if you do, let me know.
