Small Town Doctor

The Doctor Is In

Jaiselmer, India 2004

The streets in Jaiselmer Fort wind like a maze past old mansions, shops and businesses such as this doctor’s office where a young father comforts his ill child. I walked down this street at least twice and I shot a photo each time. This one tells the story. I didn’t know I had this shot until recently when I decided to scan some of my old negatives. Never delete is my motto. I learned this the hard way. I still berate myself for discarding some of my negatives without examining them carefully.

Notice that the women have turned their faces away from my lens. They hide their faces as do Muslim women. To read more about my visit to India, click here:

A Visit to India

Here is an excerpt from my Visit to India:

We hired some camels for a ride to a nearby village where we took tea with one of the village men. Being of Rajput caste, the women were kept in purdah and not allowed to meet John. Yet they called hello and peered over the wall to  look at us while taking care to keep their faces covered. Our camel guide told us that when he marries, his wife will not be allowed to speak to him in his mother’s presence, nor will he be allowed to speak or even look at her while his mother is in the room. What transpires when his mother leaves the room is left to the imagination!”
