A Rabari woman works gold thread into richly colored silk fabric in a village in northern Gujarat. These woman have become famous for their work and are often the mainstay of the family’s existence. Their husbands often help in selling their work.
They use no embroidery hoops and plan their own patterns, using traditional designs. To please the western market, they use beige and pale greens which they refer to as “English colors”.
Girls begin embroidering at an early age and one young woman had won an award in England for her artistry. She had established a training program to help the other women hone their skills.
