Shopping for Suzanis

Uzbek woman examines needlework

At Urgut Market

Urgut Market…near Samarkand 2012

A woman casts an expert eye on suzani embroidery in Urgut Market. The suzanis which could be described as embroidered coverlets  are often given as wedding gifts. We were told that hanging them on the wall is not an Uzbek practice. Uzbeks put them in a trunk or cupboard. Maybe the women bring them out when they have their friends over for tea. They can examine the needle skills and designs and describe their own endeavors. Sounds like fun!
