Shooting for Texture

TEXTURE!

Ethiopia 2013

It was market day and both sides of the highway were lined with villagers carrying their goods to market. The Ethiopians are not only champion marathoners, they are champion walkers as well. They stride along with an easy swinging pace seemingly without effort for mile after mile. No wonder they are slender!

A young man holds a trussed chicken he hopes to sell at market. How many times have I taken this shot? The shots spring to my mind…at least three times, in Morocco, India and China. This one is my favorite. Why? I have contrast emphasizing the texture of the boy’s hand, the chicken’s feathers, skin, feet and comb. I have the cord around the bird’s legs. I have the boy’s fingernails…a farmerboy’s hands rimmed with soil. I have deep, rich colors. I’m happy.
