Shakhrisabz Market

open air market in Shahrisabz Uzbekistan selling carrots

Carrots the Size of Potatoes

Shakhrisabz, Uzbekistan 2012

We drove over the mountains to Shakhrisabz, the birthplace of Tamerlane. The temperature had been in the 70’s in Samarkand, but in Shakhrisabz it was in the 90’s. I insisted on stopping for a Coke. I thought I’d faint if I didn’t get one.

After seeing the sights, the ruins of palaces and tombs built for Tamerlane’s family back in the fifteenth century, we looked in at the market. You might say Shakhrisabz is the California of Uzbekistan. Fruit and vegetables are grown in abundance.

These carrots were the size of baking potatoes. They are the main ingredient in the national dish of Plov which can sometimes be meatless but never carrot-less!
