India 2009: the streetside fish market of Kochi
We had waited for sunset to photograph the Chinese fishing nets on the beach and were returning to the bus when I saw this cat eyeing the fish. What struck me was that she just looked. Either she knew the fish was off limits or she had eaten her fill.
The fishermen had their tables under some leafy trees. It was after sunset and there was very little light. I increased my ISO for a better exposure and fired off three shots trying to compose the cat and the fish to tell the story without words.
The photo turned out to be quite contrasty and I could never get it right until yesterday. I kept working on the highlights, trying to bring them down. I kept the cat’s fur bright because she is the primary subject. I repeatedly increased the saturation of the fish. Even though the colors are ‘over the top’ they are still fish colors.
I couldn’t wait to show you.
I used my plug-in: Nik Color Efex Pro 4. If you can only afford one plug-in, I’d suggest this one. Easy to use, it takes the drudgery out of post-processing. There are similar plug-ins…they all do more or less the same thing. Download the trial version and choose for yourself. You can go to Nik’s site to watch some tutorials taught by some of the best photographers. They are free.
