San Xavier Mission del Bac

Mission San Xavier del Bac

A View of the Mission Inspired by Ansel Adams

Arizona, U.S.A. 2009

We had gone to the gem show in Tucson. My oldest daughter likes to ‘bead’. And she also likes photography, so we tried to capture the Southwest. I’d seen Ansel Adams’s version of this mission. I don’t think he had to contend with dumpsters and garbage trucks, but it is possible to work around them.

Ansel’s shot is black and white and looks as if he used infrared film. That gives the whites that glowing look. I used to love that look but never achieved it. Infrared photography required developing new skills and I was already overburdened with achieving the old skills.

The beautiful white domes and the palm trees remind me of the Middle East. That’s appropriate during the Christmas Season. It’s easy to think of Joseph and Mary passing such domes and palm trees on their way to Bethlehem.
