Romania’s Wooden Churches

Orthodox Church at Surdesti Romania rear view with cemetery, winter scene

Greek Catholic Church at Surdesti Romania

Maramures, Romania 2012

This wooden church in the village of Surdesti is made entirely of oak and put together using only the skills of master carpenters (no nails in the entire structure).  Built in 1766, commissioned by a wealthy merchant, its most striking feature is the tower which until recently was the tallest oak steeple in all of Europe reaching a height of 72 meters.

The low dipping roof that prevents a buildup of the heavy Romanian snows nearly obscures the small sanctuary windows, but we managed to peer in to see the simple low benches facing the altar with colorful icons displayed.

Perched on a wooded knoll, the church still receives the faithful on Sundays and holydays.  It was being readied for Easter celebrations when we were there and we were not allowed to enter.
