Romania:
Here is a young man of Ukrainian stock whose ancestors have lived in the Danube Delta for generations. He is rowing us through the maze of reeds that cover the delta. A fisherman could easily get lost because one can only see the reeds and the sky. The area is known as a nesting ground for many bird species.
As we were driving through the Carpathian Mountains, we came across a group of Romanian peasants whose bus had broken down. They were dressed in their traditional clothing, particularly the womenfolk, and they were taking this opportunity to have a picnic on the mountainside.
The men wear typical hats of mountain people; they’ve tucked a flower in their hat band. I think they must have been and still are charmers! The one on the left carries a sheepskin coat worn by shepherds. That coat could definitely keep you warm as you watched your flocks in wintertime.
Romania is famed for its churches especially in the Bukovina region where the frescoes are nearly as fresh as when they were painted 400 years ago.
This kindly priest stands near the reliquary and blesses us. I’m sure that is the reason this photo came out so well.
