Northern Russia 2009
Lake Ladoga provided a lifeline to the city of Leningrad during the 900 day siege by the Nazis as they attempted to conquer Russia in 1940-1941. Covered with ice thick enough to hold trucks laden with supplies, Lake Ladoga was the only route into Leningrad during those desperate days. Ladoga was a part of Finland, but after the war ended, it was ceded to Soviet Russia. Needless to say, the Finns have not forgotten.
