Teahouse in eastern Turkey

Teahouse, Eastern Turkey

Kars, Turkey 2008

This man, who seems to be taking a well-earned rest, reminds me of a character in a book I’m  reading: Orhan Pamuk’s latest  “A Strangeness in My Mind”. The story takes place about forty or fifty years ago and is about a man who sells a mildly alcoholic drink called boza on the streets of Istanbul. In those days, people had little baskets that they dropped from their upper floor windows to vendors when they wanted to buy something such as boza.

The thing is, I remember those days. I remember wandering the streets of Sultanahmet and seeing women lowering baskets to street vendors selling foodstuffs. Oh, where is my shot of that???
