Yunnan Province, China 2005
Almost every town in China has a population of at least a million, at least the towns that tourists see. I don’t know if this was Dongchuan or Yuanyang or another place. Before I started my blog, I didn’t bother to remember the fine details. I do remember the hotel we stayed in. The girls are walkiing on the ‘patio’ area in front of the hotel. There was a covering of mud slurry over the tiles and over every surface in town. We could hardly walk for fear of slipping and falling. The Chinese were used to it. How? They walked freely with no worries of losing balance.
This photo brings back memories of school days, doesn’t it? My father was in the Navy and we moved frequently. I was often the new girl at at school. I didn’t like being the new girl, but I learned how to deal with it. The popular girls would be stand-offish, so, I’d befrend anyone who needed a friend.
My brother, as the new boy, had it harder than I did. He often had to fight the local bully. He wasn’t the biggest or the strongest but he had guts and would wade in with fists flying. He was a reader and he read somewhere that he needed to land the first blow and that it should be a direct hit on his opponents nose. It turned out to be a good strategy.
