Portraits, Plain and Painterly

portrait of a Rabari girl with goat
Portraits, one using Topaz Simplify

Here is a photo I especially like.  The girl is a Rabari which is a tribe found in Gujarat and Rajasthan, India. Primarily they are shepherds or they raise camels. Nowadays, with the encroaching of farms on grazing land, sheep are easier for them. Farmers are not always glad to see them when they are on the move. Sometimes, though, farmers have deals with the Rabari for the sheep or other herds to ‘fertilize’ their fields.

It was early morning when I shot this photo. The girl picked up a goat as she knew tourist photographers like this type of shot. I love the look in her eyes, a bit dreamy, don’t you think?

I quickly used Topaz to show you what a painterly version would look like. I didn’t do Topaz justice as I only spent a minute or two on this.  I shouldn’t show you, if I’m not satisfied, but I thought you’d want to see.
