Her name was Sitra. She was about 8 years old, a chunky, hoarse-voiced little girl who sang for her supper at Pushkar Fair in Rajasthan. That is her father standing behind her, playing a tanpura, a type of lute. Singers, dancers, and other performers are from the lowest caste. Once called “untouchables’ they are, since Ghandi’s time, now called Harijans or children of God.
