Practice at the Zoo

tiger in motion

Captivity

Los Angeles, California 2015

The tiger was restless. He paced back and forth along the edge of the moat in his enclosure. We felt sorry for him because we imagined that he was unhappy.

I had plenty of chances to get my shot but still only one or two out of thirty or forty are good. I was shooting from about 20 feet above the tiger. And I was happy because it was a bird’s-eye view. It turns out, though, that each viewpoint has its good points and its drawbacks. I noticed when I got home, that the tiger’s eyes weren’t visible in many of my shots and we know that eyes are crucial.

This shot is one of my best. I used a light vignette to give it a Chinese brush stroke look, a technique especially suited to tigers.

He looks restless, I like your bw treatment and how you isolated him. Hope to see a color one of yours yet, because he was sooo beautiful.
