Portrait of a Nomad

Berber

Bouarfa, Morocco 2006

He called himself a nomad. I wrote the Moroccan word in my notebook but look! that was ten years ago. He and his family had driven their sheep from Erfoud to Bouarfa (about 500 km ) in order to get a better price at the market in Bouarfa.

He invited me and my guide to his tent where he ordered a goat to be slaughtered in celebration of getting a good price.

This woman and baby had accompanied the men and flocks to Bouarfa. They told me that she would ride a donkey when she got tired. I imagine that she looked forward to the trek each year as it would remind her of her youth.

Her nails are orange-tinged from the application of henna. Henna is not only a beauty treatment but it brings good luck and good health. The nomads have to believe in its efficacy as they have little else as medicine.
