Portrait of a Marwari

Marwari

Gujarat, India 2009

A prized Marwari mare eats her grain. Notice the curved tips of her ears. The ideal is that the tips of the ears will touch when the horse is looking and listening to something in front of her.  A well-bred Marwari is similar to an Arabian but heavier and with sturdier looking legs. At one time, the English considered the Marwari to be an inferior animal, but it seemed to me that there had been an infusion of good stock and any faults in the breed had been rectified. But still, those ears! Those are an acquired taste.
