Minaret and the Plains of Syria

A minaret overlooks the plains of Syria
Overlooking the Plains of Syria

This was shot from a hilltop in the border town of Mardin, Turkey. The bird’s eye viewpoint makes this picture. It almost seems as if it were shot from a plane.

We shot many, many minarets when we were in Turkey. We often framed them through arches. I got tired of that shot after a while, but shooting towers with nothing else but sky is boring. Here there is a lot to look at. First is the minaret which is nicely lit by the setting sun, the darkening sky and the colorful rooftops of the village below.

The hills on the plain are treeless.  Their shape is round, as if a hand had smoothed the dirt as one would shape a sand castle. Lovely.
