Northern Russia: Landscape with Village

a tumble-down village in the north of Russia

The Russian Village

Northern Russia 2009

The problem with being on a cruise is that you can never go off by yourself. You never get to peek in windows or doorways of villages like this one. You rarely see anyone “out and about” as they say. You must be content to get a shot from the deck’s rail.

I like this landscape with the village houses all askew and the unkempt gardens. Russians, I’ve read, prefer a natural look to their surroundings. The scene makes me think of Tolstoy and Gogol and Turgenev.

I used Topaz Impressions to get this faded, sketch-like look.
