Niger River Traffic

A wooden boat with curved sail echoing the curve of a man's back plies the Niger River

Two on the Niger

Mali, West Africa 2003

A man and a boy float on the Niger propelled by the wind. The billowing sail echoes the ‘c’ curve of the man’s back. The ‘c’ curve integrates the aspects of the image. Look for curving lines when you can…I do it after…in my workroom. But if you can see it when you are in the field, make use of it in your composition.

The painted designs on the prow of the boat most likely are to bring good luck. The designs on the man’s gandoura (gown) echo these good luck omens.
