Multitasking

Bamako woman carrying baby and laundry

Doing it all

Bamako, Mali 2005

I noticed this woman right after I photographed the charcoal makers that I showed you yesterday. She had come from the river banks where she had scrubbed all those clothes by hand. Her baby had remained tied onto her back, no doubt. I don’t think I ever saw a woman put her baby on the ground outside. There are too many stray dogs and other animals that might harm the baby.

I don’t know how they have the babies tied so securely…all they do is take a strip of fabric and wrap it around the baby and tie it across their breasts. But they do stay secure. The babies are often sound asleep as this one seems to be.
