Mother Russia

painterly photograph of a Russian Church with it's blue-green onion domes and surrounding village

On the banks of the Volga

Northern Russia 2009

As our ship steamed along the “Waterways of the Czars” I watched the shore for photographic subjects. Onion domed churches, some in good condition, some derelict drew my eye. How could I not shoot each and every one of them? I’d shoot as we approached, as we passed and as they receded into the distance.

This photo looks like a digital painting. I added some canvas texture to it, but the photo itself looked painterly due to the diffused light on the trees. There was a time in the early days of photography that painterly photographs were prized. Then the idea fell into disfavor because it was an imitation of actual painting. Photography had to stand on its own to be considered an art.
