Mangalore, India 2009
An itinerant laborer from Bihar (or somewhere like Bihar) is confident that the camera loves him. And it does!! He was part of a group of his tribe, whatever tribe it was, filling bags with sand on the quay at Mangalore. He was, as you can see, quite handsome, and he was enjoying himself: flirting and working, working and flirting.
The women of the tribe did the same work as the men. I don’t think they found it difficult. Nor did they find it difficult to look beautiful as they shoveled sand. They wore their hair ornaments, nose rings, and silk embroidered skirts. This woman, who dressed like this everyday, seems puzzled that I would want to photograph her.
