Maramures
Maramures, Romania 2012
I made my guide stop the car whenever I spotted a babushka like this woman. Although she doesn’t wear the traditional costume, her knee-length black wool dress, her kerchief, cane and leggings give her a look of old Romania. The wooden fence, the yellow house with peeling paint and the address number add a charming feel to her portrait. Notice that she is off to the side of the photo. That gives space for all those background details.
