Marabou Storks

Ethiopia 2013

I took many photos of marabout storks when I was on an animal safari almost 20 years ago. I shot black and white film and none of my stork photos appealed to me. Last year in Ethiopia, I had my chance to redeem myself. I shot many photos of Marabou storks using digital. I got the color but still didn’t like any of my photos. Let’s face it. The Marabou stork is not pretty…at least not until you get some software called Impressions made by Topaz Labs. I was able to give this shot, which has good composition, a sunset look rather than the harsh, bright but contrasty look of high noon.

With the software, and also Photoshop, I could bring out the magentas and yellows that give this photo the look of a primeval swamp. And just think! I was going to delete these photos.
