Looking for Walker Evans

Remnant of the Old South

I was looking for the “Old South” when I went to South Carolina a few weeks ago…the South where I grew up. Sorry to say, it no longer exists or at least I couldn’t find it.

I stopped in Yemassee, SC on my explorations and, in Ray’s Café, I was told about this place which was right across the street. Yes! This is what I was looking for. Walker Evans type shots.

The structure is now a church but during WWII, young men being inducted into the Marine Corps, were transported to this spot by train and then taken to Parris Island for training. That’s why there is a painting of a train on the church sign. The second photo is the back of the building showing how the Marines can make a man of you.

Time to remember those who sacrificed for our country

Lots of history here. I applied a large vignette to the church to indicate the passing of time and also a feeling of hot sun beating down on landscape.  The Marine sign says it all.
