pastoral scene: Ethiopian herders water the tribe's cattle

Watering Cattle in Ethiopia

Ethiopia, south of Addis Ababa 2013

Less than a hundred miles from the capital city of Addis Ababa, we came upon these herders watering cattle. The cattle represented the tribe’s wealth and the young men had the responsibility of their care. Crocodiles lurk in the lakes. The men had to be on the lookout, not only for the cattle’s safety but for their own. I would dread watering time if I were a herder.

The highway was above the lake and so we had a good viewpoint for our photographs. The sun was setting and a golden light enriched the colors. Yet it took me a while to get a composition that I liked.  I decided this shot was my best because the herds of cattle form a circle. I’d have liked it better if the men wore traditional clothes but we can’t have everything.

When you are shooting, you might not see the circle of cattle herds or diagonal lines. Trust your instincts to take over. Enjoy the moment.  And when you are back at your computer, look for design elements. They will help you choose your best shot.
