Lalibella, Ethiopia 2013
Lalibella is not a thriving economic center. Most of the inhabitants seemed extremely poor in material wealth, but they had riches in abundance in spiritual wealth. Later, I’ll post photos of mass on St. Gabriel’s Day and try my best to describe the gentle goodness that radiated from the worshippers.
Here are typical huts, made of stone with thatched roofs. Some were two stories: animals lived on the first floor and provided heat for the upper floor where the family lived. This is the neighborhood near the large Saturday Market. The ground looks level here, but where I was walking was rock-strewn, downhill and treacherous for someone who was not used to walking over rubble.
My guide, Melkamu, was in the process of building a hotel where the rooms were huts built in traditional fashion. I ate in his restaurant, also built in this style. It was lovely. It is called the “Old Abyssinia ” I recommend it.
Just when I was complaining about too many people shots and not enough landscapes, buildings, etc. you sent this one which I really like. Not better than people shots, just different. J.
