Khampa

Khampa man wearing cowboy style hat

East meets West

I shot this handsome Kham man on the streets of Yushou. It was after the festival and there were many Kham, men and women, gathered on the streets in their best dress. This man wears a version of a cowboy hat. I’ve read that the custom stems from seeing cowboy movies back in the 1930’s.

Traditional Khampa

These men are dressed in traditional clothing. They wear the same type coat that is worn in Tibet and Ladakh. The red tassel in their hair is typical Kham. The people are tall and muscular and handsome. They were known as warriors in times past.
