Southern California 2013
I was happy to go to Katie’s barn to photograph Marshall. He’s a Hanoverian/Saddlebred cross with the huge stride and sweet temperament of a warmblood.
I turned the photo into a digital painting. I had to delete the background. (It took forever even though I have software from Topaz to make it easy. I must practice that. )
Had to find a suitable background among my photos. Then worked on the image of the horse to make it painterly. The background colors turned garish. I didn’t notice that until I thought, ‘would Katie want those colors in her house?’.
It was trial and error until somehow I arrived at this portrait. I go into a sort of trance when I’m doing Photoshop. I can’t tell you what I did because I don’t name my layers. It doesn’t matter though. Each photo is different and I must start from scratch.
