An old wooden monastery that sits on Lake Inle. Inside are 100 year old Buddha images from the Shan, Tibeten, Inwa and Bagan cultures. They are lovely, but I was interested in the jumping cats. For some reason, I had the idea that the cats were tigers. I think I’ve seen monks training tigers on tv, haven’t I?
But these were house cat size. Some looked like pure-bred Burmese. Some were black and white and some tabby colored. A woman holding a hoop would rub the underside of a cat’s neck then hold the hoop about 2 feet high and the cat would leap through it. Some cats enjoyed it and came back to the woman for more. Others were less enthusiastic. If the cat didn’t look up at the hoop, she knew the cat would not jump.
