Imilchil, Morocco 2000
Every year there is a Marriage Festival at Imilchil, a village in the High Atlas Mountains. The idea of a marriage festival draws tourists but the chance to buy, sell and trade draws the Berbers who are known for their business acumen.
The Berbers who had come to do business were hardy souls. They waited for buyers in the icy wind wearing homespun wool djellabas (hooded robe) and rough sandals on bare feet.
Women held the fort while the men haggled. Here a woman watches her husband’s cattle. She wears the typical striped, hooded cloak of her tribe. Custom decrees that the women must cover their hair, but they have devised myriad ways to make themselves attractive under scarves and hoods and veils.
The young women of the tribe color their cheeks with cochineal: large red circles heighten their already ruddy complexion. Eyes are heavily rimmed with kohl. These girls were determined not to let me get a photo! And I didn’t.
Another view of the camel market using Snap Art 4 to make a digital painting. I must say there were some handsome Berber men in this shot!
