Enjoy the Sunshine While You Can

This was 1990. We drove through Eastern Europe’s countryside. People were giddy at the thought of freedom from communism’s ubiquitous controls. Restaurants were springing up where ever a frying pan could be found. Artists were bringing out their work, displaying it on street corners. Embroiderers and lace makers stood by the Fisherman’s Bastion holding up what could become family heirlooms.

But the grandmas stayed home and carried on. They’d been through many upheavals and who knew how long this would last. In the meantime, ‘make the most of today’s sunshine’ seemed to be their plan.
