Ghana 2001 …a village somewhere in the middle of the country
A boy stands by a sign advertising what was called a ‘tele-boutique’: a shop with several phone booths and a clerk who could change money or help you dial if you were unfamiliar with using a telephone. No one had a phone in their home.
When mobile phones became ubiquitous, European companies moved in and cornered the market in many African countries. Soon everyone had a cell phone and the boutique owners turned to selling cards for the phones.
